"This morning's conference was great!  It was a wide range of participants on the panels and that was a great way to hear a wide view of options and ideas from the panelists!  Kevin Hancock gets my vote for most open, honest and helpful answers to questions. He was outstanding and his thoughts today were very heartfelt and honest.  Take away the layers of "facade" and discuss the truth of what it's like and how you face the issuers."

Background:  The Institute for Family-Owned Business (IFOB) is a non-profit 501 (c) 3 organization committed to supporting, strengthening and empowering family-owned businesses throughout the state of Maine. Since 1994, the Institute has served family business owners, executives and employees through a wide range of continuing education programs, networking opportunities and consulting services. The Institute is a comprehensive resource for family-owned business.

Each year since 2000, the IFOB recognizes family-owned, Maine-based businesses through its Maine Family Business Awards (MFBA).   The gala attracts family businesses large and small with an audience of over 400, hosted by News Center Maine news anchor Cindy Williams. The MFBA, presented in partnership with MEMIC is a celebration that pays more than just recognition; it serves as a vehicle for networking and opening up all shades of possibilities for families seeking to grow their business.

Since its inception, 89 businesses have been recognized for various categories of excellence. On June 5, 2019, we will celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the Maine Family Business Awards with guest speaker, Shawn Gorman, Executive Chairman of the Board and the great-grandson of L.L.Bean.

The awards celebrate the accomplishments of small and large businesses that exemplify the following criteria:

  • Business success
  • Positive business and family linkages
  • Contributions to the community and industry
  • Family participation
  • Work environment
  • Communication
  • Innovative business practices or strategies

Awards are presented in seven categories:

1.       Maddy Corson Small Business Award (fewer than 25 employees)
2.       Renys Large Business Award (25 or more employees)
3.       Shep Lee Community Service Award
4.       Chalmers Insurance Group Customer Service Award
5.       Holiday Inn By the Bay First Generation Award
6.       People's United Bank Innovation & Technology Award
7.       Varney Agency Environmental Leadership Award

Objective:  The IFOB is looking for graphic designer to work closely with the executive director of the IFOB, the director of communications, the MFBA committee, judges, PR consultant, designer, venue consultants and vendors as a team to successfully complete the awards night.  Patty Johnson, who was the previous graphic designer, is retiring after over 10 years of service as an independent contractor providing design services for the awards.

In 2018, we had a record 186 nominations, 39 semi-finalists, 24 finalists and 7 award winners. With this transition and this marking the 20th anniversary of the awards, the IFOB is open to new ideas and input while maintaining the level of excellence that has been the hallmark of this awards night.

Statement of Work:  The MFBA is the culmination of many, many elements, resulting in a profitable celebration of family businesses.  It is the largest fundraiser for the IFOB.  We need a graphic designer to design, coordinate and deliver all marketing materials leading up to the awards night and announcing the winners.

General Timetable:  The graphic designer will work directly with the executive director (Catherine Wygant Fossett), the director of communications (Brooke Stewart) the show producer (Keith Citrine), and the PR team (Angie Helton from NEMA Northeast Media Associates) to coordinate the marketing materials.  The detailed MFBA 2019 Graphic Design Deliverables includes what needs to be designed and the general deadline that is subject to change.  Examples of all ads and collateral are attached along with links to the MFBA Program Book and Calendar Insert.

Responsibilities:

1.       Work with the IFOB team to design the various collateral materials.
2.       Follow the timeline for deliverables on or before the due date.
3.       Provide appropriate graphic files to the IFOB, newspapers, printer and others as needed.
4.       Ensure that all products meet the high standards of print and creative design quality.
5.       Attend meetings as needed to assist in the design of the marketing materials.
Duration of Engagement:  The MFBA preparation begins in November and finalizes in June for a total duration of 8 months.  We have a possibility of extending this relationship beyond that time frame as budget permits.  We may also be looking for additional graphic design projects to include updating the IFOB logo and other ads for events and programs in 2019.

Proposal & Pricing Instructions:  Please prepare a written proposal, including cover letter, resume, three references and budget estimate.  Your proposal should include the kind of information that we will need to make our decision including why you would like to be our graphic designer and your working style.  Please submit work samples and/or links that demonstrate your experience with similar events and programs plus any new ideas you would like us to consider.  Thank you in advance for your consideration.  We look forward to continuing our discussion.
