Business Description

Dawn Gilbert opened Heads of the Harbor in June of 1980 with a vision to beautify the ladies of Boothbay Harbor. Her daughter, Lora Rinow, first joined the business as a receptionist that summer and then as a Cosmetologist in 1984. Rinow’s daughter, Nicole MacDonald, joined as a recpetionist in the summer of 1999, came on as an apprentice in 2004, and a Cosmetologist in 2020. We have changed locations over the years, expanding our space and services each time, but always remaining on Union Street, at the ”head of the harbor.” As we have grown, we have continued to develop our skills and services, updating and modifying them as the times and demands evolve. Shampoo sets and tints have morphed into keratin blowouts and balyage, permanents have dwindled while conditioning treatments increase in demand, walk-in services have been suspensed as pre-booking has become necessary, and complementary beverages and snacks have been adopted in lieu of a ”smoking section.” With the next generation of ownership, the salon will continue to expand its services and its tradition of giving back to the community, while also adopting more of a focus on the educational aspects of the industry.
