Family Business History
A decade ago, Lucie Narukundo (her father is from the Democratic Republic of Congo (D.R.C.) and her mother is from Rwanda) and her family came to the U.S. after being granted asylum as refugees and genocide survivors fleeing war torn Rwanda. Even in the presence of innumerable obstacles, including language barriers, cultural/societal differences and limited business acumen, Lucie and her husband, Budederi Boniface took a leap of faith and opened Moriah Market LLC in 2017 as a way of remaining independent, functioning and contributing members of their new American community. “Ours is a community-based culture, where everything revolves around families,” says Lucie, CEO of Moriah Market. This means family members are committed to help with business operations when needed. Over the years, Moriah Market has become a beacon in Maine’s ever-growing immigrant community. Lucie serves as a community liaison, family counselor, and general helper for all immigrants as they navigate this new world.
