Business Description
There have been many changes over the years at R.J. Grondin & Sons, starting with the first major change of transitioning from a dairy farm to construction company in 1959. As dairy business became less and less profitable, Bob Grondin Sr.’s two sons Bob Jr. and Phil convinced him to sell the dairy heard and start a construction business. With the financial backing of Bob Sr., the hard work, dedication and drive of Bob Jr. & Phil, and the bookkeeping skills of their mother Laurence – R.J. Grondin & Sons was born. By the end of the 60’s another major change occurred when the old barn was raised to make way for a new 4 bay full-service shop, allowing the brothers to work on their own equipment. In the 70’s, 3 more family members joined the company – sister Bess and her husband Tom as well as Bob Jr’s eldest son Bob III. The old milk room was renovated and became the office as the Company continued to grow. Changes continued throughout the 80’s with Bob Jr’s two other sons (Ken & Chris) joining the company and the award of their first million-dollar job. By the end of the 80’s the company finished constructing a new 23,000 sf Corporate Headquarters down the hill from the shop and had integrated technology into their process, including digitizing takeoffs of plans for more accurate grade calculations, utilizing GPS equipment in the field and using software for all accounting & estimating functions. By the end of the 90’s Phil’s two sons, Larry & Phil Jr. joined the Company full-time, making a total of 10 family members working for the company. A major change happened in the early 2000’s when Bob Jr. & Phil Sr. retired from the company and transitioned management & ownership to their sons. Each of the kids took on the leadership of different areas of the business – Bob III handled the field and safety, Ken handled the estimating and project management departments, Chris handled the shop, Larry handled the pits & quarries and Phil Jr. handled the office. By 2018 Ken, Phil & Chis all transitioned out of the business leaving Bob III and Larry as the remining owners. At the end of 2023 Bob III retired, bringing more change to the company as his son-in-law, Sean O’Leary, became the first 4th generation owner. In the future, we see additional changes coming as technology advances and we integrate more of it into our processes. Over the past 3 years we’ve seen considerable growth in the use of technology within or business, including fully integrating telematics throughout our fleet of trucks & equipment, using iPads and construction software to record and transmit the daily field reports, safety reporting, quantity and production tracking, time & equipment tracking, and timecards. We expect to see more integration between the various platforms used across the accounting, estimating, safety, project management, aggregates & equipment departments as we continue to leverage technology to increase efficiency.
