Business Description

The company was started in 1854 by Spencer Walcott Mathews and Noah Merrill Mathews, later to be joined by another brother, Sanford Hills Mathews. When the three brothers passed away, the company was left to wives and daughters. In 1899, Clara Starrett Mathews, Addie Richmond Mathews, and Maude Elizabeth Mathews were Officers of the company; a time in which it was extremely rare to have female leadership at the helm of a company. Many changes have occurred since 1854 within the company; product offerings at times included windows, spiral staircases, coffins, a five-masted schooner, interior doors, patio doors, and kitchen design. Moving forward into the careers of Kyle and Alex Hawthorne, they have made changes to product offerings both with discontinuing products and adding new products. There is a use of metadata to make strategic decisions throughout the company and it is moving toward a paperless operation by integrating operational paperwork into machines and implementing an HR information system to reduce the need for paper forms. The company has grown to include Engineering and Automation teams for better support to future R&D and current operations. A second shift was started for the first time in the company’s history and operations were expanded to include a facility in Hermon, ME. The company anticipates further expansion of capabilities at the Hermon facility and of the Belfast, ME second shift teams. It is further expected to grow the footprint beyond New England as capacities grow at the current facilities. Further expansion may lead to the need for infrastructure outside the New England area and overarching systems to facilitate communication and execution. As technology advances, the company has been on the cutting edge of new offerings and actively partners with outside vendors on R&D. It is expected that some of these R&D projects will change the industry standard offer in time, with Mathews at the forefront.
