Business Description
As a fly tyer I have been innovative with my fly patterns over the years and have received recognition for them in publications. My first fly to take off was the "Hexamongous." It is a Hex fly that catches huge fish. When it first became known I was on a pond in Vienna only to discover that six other fanglers were there fishing with my new fly And catching trout. Most recently the fly was published in Bob Mallard's book Favorite Fliesfor Maine: Fifty Essential Patterns from Local Experts, 2021. Another Pattern that gained popularity was the "Sure Bet" in 2007. It is also featured in Bob Mallards The Heritage of fly fishing in Maine is steep with legendary figures that influenced angling through time and borders. It is apparent that our values stand in heritage by looking at the large windows of our shop with 18 feet of them filled with a hundred year old Rangeley boat on display. Within the shop our “Cabinet of Wonders” has expanded to three other showcases that feature a collection of unique memorabilia from prominent figures in fly tying and influencers such as Carrie Stevens. She was the creator of the famed Gray Ghost fly and tied flies in her hands without a vise. I have continued her tradition and do the same in demonstrations to share her story. We have her flies and other unique possessions of hers on display. In addition we have a display that features Fly Rod Crosby, the first person to receive a Guide’s License in Maine. Many other famous fly tyers are represented as well. It is to this end of preserving heritage that we are known for that well known Angler and Fly Casting Instructor that retired from LL Bean, Rod McGary donated his entire library to our shop when he had to downsize his living situation. He did this knowing that we would preserve his collection. Most of the books are signed from noted tyers and anglers known world wide. It was decided to keep the collection intact at the shop for all to make use of by making an approachable place for people to sit a spell and read a book or two. Books from the McGary Library are neither loaned nor sold. Every so often I post on social media a “McGary Nugget.” A wise statement that I find on the scraps of paper that are left between the pages of these books that are the musings of Rod’s mind that make his collection that much more special. We carry Maine tied flies and flies that have caught fish in Maine waters for decades. If it isn’t one that we carry regularly we tie custom flies too. Offering top notch customer service. At Selene’s Fly Shop, we honor Maine’s outdoor traditions by providing high-quality gear, flies, and tying supplies to anglers here and beyond. We’re committed to sustainability, clean water, and preserving the sport for future generations. Through our guide service and year-round education, we teach responsible practices and deepen the connection between people and the water. Our customers come second—only to the health of the rivers and all who depend on them.
Get in touch with us via phone, email, or online contact form, and we’ll be in touch to discuss the ways in which we can work together.
