Guidelines for Conflict Management
This article shares the guidelines one fourth generation family business created to keep discussions productive.
Mutual respect for others feelings and opinions
No physical acting out
No leaving the room, physically or mentally, during a discussion
The issue must be resolved before the meeting ends unless all agree to table it
Follow rules of effective listening
Make eye contact
Be responsive
“I” statements
Think from the others perspective
Think before you speak
No interrupting
Group hug after “hot” issue is resolved
You do not always have to be right...mistakes are OK
Strive for a win/win outcome
Have facts at hand and be as objective as you can be...remember. we are all looking out for the best interest of the company
Be open and honest
There are no titles in the group; everyone is equal
Practice professionalism
Sensitive issues are to be kept within the group
